Isuzu MU-X Review, For Sale, Colours, Models, Specs & Interior

The rugged Isuzu MU-X (which oddly stands for Mysterious Utility – eXtreme) is a 4x4 wagon based on the company's only other passenger vehicle, the D-Max ute.

The MU-X – like its key competitors, the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Everest – eschew leaf springs at the rear in favour of softer coils, but its otherwise mechanically identical to its ute brethren. Available in a rear- or four-wheel drive layout in the $47,400 MU-X LS-M (4X2) and $69,400 MU-X LS-T (4X4) models respectively, the five seat wagon also offers a third row of seats, allowing a total of seven people to ride aboard. A five-speed automatic transmission backs its torquey 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, and since 2021 it can tow up to 3500kg of braked trailer behind it.

This vehicle is also known as Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet D-Max, Chevrolet LUV D-Max, Holden Colorado, Holden Rodeo, Isuzu KB, Isuzu LB, Isuzu Rodeo, Chevrolet T Series, GMC Canyon.

Isuzu MU-X Q&As

Check out real-world situations relating to the Isuzu MU-X here, particularly what our experts have to say about them.

  • Air conditioning problems with the 2021 Isuzu MU-X LS-T SUV

This is an annoying but relatively common problem in many cars, not just the Isuzu. Because a car’s air-conditioning system dehumidifies the air (as well as cooling it) the water that was suspended in the air has to go somewhere. When everything’s working properly, there’s a small drain-hose from the air-con unit, through the floor to under the car where the water can be dumped with no problems.

But what often happens is that the little tube or drain-hose becomes blocked. At which point, the air from the atmosphere has nowhere to go other than inside the cabin where it causes the mayhem you’re experiencing. By locating the drain-tube and cleaning it out, the problem should go away. If not, you need to look more closely at the car’s heater matrix which also lives under the dashboard and can leak coolant into the cabin for a similar range of problems.

  • Remote locking system in my 2023 Isuzu MU-X has stopped working

Electrical failures like this are not uncommon even on brand-new cars. You could have a problem with the body computer, the wiring system, the lock actuators, a fuse or relay or even the key fob that you use to control the locking. However, the solution is pretty simple: This car should still be under the factory warranty (even if you’re not the original owner) so all you need do is take it back to an Isuzu dealer. Under Australian Consumer Law (provided you haven’t caused the problem through negligence or mis-use) the manufacturer is responsible for fixing problems like this one at no cost to you.

  • My 2023 Isuzu MU-X LST has a flat battery after a week away

A lot of people think that a car that is switched off and locked won’t be draining its battery at all. But that’s not the case. Electronic equipment often imposes a constant drain on the car’s battery, and things like the stereo (for keeping stored radio frequencies) and any alarm system can create a constant draw on the battery. And when you think about it, even the remote central locking needs to be 'alive' all the time so that it can identify and act on your command to open the doors and prepare the car to be started.

However, I wouldn’t expect a nearly new car battery to be unable to survive a single week of not being driven. So maybe there’s something else going on. It could even be that the battery itself is faulty and not holding a charge as it should.

I’d be talking to the dealership as a fault with, say, a luggage area light staying on or any other piece of equipment not switching off when it should, is potentially a warranty claim. Just don’t expect Isuzu to cover the cost of a new battery. Like tyres and brake pads, batteries are considered consumables and are generally not covered by a new-car warranty. Although if it’s an electrical fault on the car that has caused the death of the battery, I reckon it’s an arguable case.

  • What tow vehicle or hybrid camper should I consider for after retirement?

The last decade of dual-cab four-wheel-drive utes have emerged as the tow-vehicles of choice, and you see them everywhere filling roles exactly like the one you have planned. Popular models include the Ford Ranger you’ve nominated, Toyota HiLux, Mazda BT-50, VW Amarok, Mitsubishi Triton, Nissan Navara and Isuzu D-Max. But there are also cheaper alternatives including makes like the South-Korean made Ssangyong and various Chinese brands like LDV and Great Wall.

Just make sure you know exactly how much you need to tow before making a decision as some of the cheaper models don’t have the same outright towing capacity and even if they do, some of them don’t have the engine performance to make towing as easy as it should be. For parts availability, the Toyota would be king in really remote areas, but any of the major brands are pretty well covered in Australia.

Meantime, don’t rule out ute-based wagons such as the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Fortuna. These offer better ride comfort when unladen thanks to more sophisticated rear suspensions and most have as much or almost as much towing capacity as their ute brethren.

Isuzu MU-X Seats

Practicality has always been a sizeable Isuzu MU-X perk, regardless of the engine. That starts with seven seats, and a back row where actual full-size humans can spend time — and there are not many three-row SUVs you can say that about.

The middle row, too, is pretty spacious, though it is lacking in a few creature comforts, with just the air-con vents (but no temp controls) and a couple of USB ports to keep you company.

Isuzu MU-X Boot Space

You’ll find 311 litres of boot space with all three rows in place, growing to 1119 litres with the second row folded flat, and 2138 litres with just the front two seats in action.

Isuzu MU-X Interior

Inside the Isuzu MU-X presents as a little utilitarian, with some plastics that feel like they could survive a nuclear blast, and the 7.0- and 9.0-inch central screens both feel a little underwhelming by modern standards.

It all feels very comfortable and hard-wearing, though, which is probably every bit as important, given the MU-X’s target market.

Isuzu MU-X Engine

The 1.9-litre, flour-cylinder turbo-diesel delivers 110kW and 350Nm. They don’t sound like massive numbers, but Isuzu makes the point that the torque delivery is wide, with maximum grunt available from 1800rpm to 2600rpm. The 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four delivers 140kW/450Nm.

Isuzu MU-X Engine

Isuzu MU-X Range

A perk of the smaller engine is a smaller fuel bill, with the 1.9-litre turbo-diesel promising to drink 7.4L/100km on the combined cycle - almost a litre less than the 3.0-litre 4x4 model, which is more like 8.3L/100km.

Isuzu says the 80-litre fuel tank should deliver almost 1100km of driving range between refills for the 1.9L and 960km for the 3.0L.

Isuzu MU-X Wheel Size

The Isuzu MU-X has a number of different wheel and tyre options. When it comes to tyres, these range from 255x65 R17 for SUV in 2025.

Year Body Type Front Tyre Size Front Rim Rear Tyre Size Rear Rim
2025 SUV 255x65 R17 255x65 R17
2024 SUV 255x65 R17 255x65 R17
