It’s very close and it goes without saying that if you’re after a car that fits eight people, the Palisade is for you as the CX-9 seats seven. While the CX-9 scored higher points for design, driving and fuel consumption, the Palisade beat it on space. They seem on par for safety but the Palisade edges slightly ahead with tech as it has the touchscreen.

The Mazda CX-9's family friendly interior is headlined by a ‘floating’ central display that measures up 10.25 inches in diameter, with the largest version powered by the latest multimedia system, which uses a rotary controller as its input method.

The CX-9’s boot is still pretty usable with all three rows in action, with 230L of cargo capacity available, but you can stow the two rear seats to get 810L in total. And if you want maximum cargo capacity, the middle seats can also be folded, but not in the Azami LE, annoyingly.

Are there plans for a new Mazda CX-9?
Mazda introduced this version of the CX-9 in mid-2016. There have been a couple of facelifts since then (including some specification and model shuffling, as recently as late last year) but there probably won’t be an all-new CX-9 for at least another few years. Based on the previous model’s eight-year lifespan, you could figure on 2024 or so for an all-new CX-9 and you might be getting close.
