My 2016 Renault Koleos CVT needs replacing

Answered by CarsGuide 10 Jul 2025

The best place to start for some professional advice is a transmission specialist. They’ll probably inspect the transmission in your car and will be able to work out whether it can be fixed or if it needs to be replaced.

If you do need a replacement CVT, there are three main ways to go. You could buy a brand new replacement CVT which is likely to be the most expensive course of action. The second alternative is to have the transmission shop recondition the one you already have. This will also be quite expensive.

The third option is to find a good, tested second-hand CVT from a wrecked Koleos and have that fitted. This will be by far the cheapest way to go. But the gamble with option three is that the same problems might happen again, and you’d be back to square one.

I agree that a 2016 model-year car is too new to be thrown away, but failures of CVT transmissions are more common than they should be. It’s something car makers need to look at when they consider future designs and engineering.

Renault Koleos 2016: How do I reset the clock?

Answered by CarsGuide 15 Feb 2020

I contacted Renault Australia about this, Trevor. But it seems they need to know the trim level and precise model before they can offer an answer. Apparently, different specifications across the Koleos range meant that some variants had a different clock in a different dashboard which required a different technique to reset. Have you asked at a dealership?

Is accidental damage covered by warranty?

Answered by CarsGuide 31 Mar 2017

Only you can know how the sensor was damaged. If a car had reversed into it you should be able to see some other damage in the area around the sensor, but there might not be any other damage visible if it was knocked or kicked as the dealer has suggested. The new car warranty doesn't cover accidental damage like that you car has sustained, and I'm not surprised Renault has refused to cover the cost of repairs.

Best trade in for a Territory TX?

Answered by CarsGuide 14 Oct 2016

I am reluctant to recommend any European car, particularly those from VW, because of the problems that have soured the ownership experience for so many people. Rather than those you name I would be looking at the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or Suzuki Vitara.

Compact SUV under $22k?

Answered by CarsGuide 18 Mar 2016

If you listen to Koleos owners you’ll hear that they’re generally happy with their cars and that little goes wrong with them. Those who complain at all mostly do so about servicing. If you buy one make sure it has been well looked after and properly serviced.
