Ask Smithy Xtra VW Golf DSG Module

Answered by CarsGuide 5 Oct 2010

The industry is definitely moving towards using non-serviceable components and has been for many years. The theory is that they can better control repairs to the car by simply replacing a failed component rather than relying on the skill or lack of skill of individual operators. One possible way you could get the module at a cheaper price is to shop around specialist VW dealers, many of whom import parts directly from Europe and can offer them at a lower price. We haven’t had any other reports of this issue, but perhaps other owners could tell us of any problems they have had.

Golf needs a good lift

Answered by CarsGuide 8 Jan 2010

YES, it is correct. VW's technical people say the belt should be replaced every four years or 105,000km. Because your car is four years old the dealer is telling you it needs replacing -- mileage has no bearing on it. Yours isn't the first report I have had on the Golf wearing out the rear brakes first. I suggest you ask your dealer to show you the worn rotors and explain why they need replacing.

Golf's Cambelt Drive

Answered by CarsGuide 21 Aug 2009

A CARMAKERS place time and distance limits on cambelts and yours has exceeded the time limit, so yes, have it changed. The potential damage to the engine if it breaks is too expensive to gamble on.

Little oil rig

Answered by CarsGuide 31 Mar 2006

VW'S technical people say your usage is within expected range. VW engines have a reputation for using some oil, so it's a good idea to check the oil regularly.

Economy car

Answered by CarsGuide 11 Aug 2005

RENAULT doesn't market a diesel engine here, so rule that out. You could consider a VW Golf diesel. Both the Peugeot and VW diesels are well built, reliable and economical so that would probably be the best overall option.
