A good replacement for my Magna around $10k?

Asked by Carl Russo

I'm looking to upgrade from my 1999 Mitsubishi Magna TH Advance, which has served me well. She's currently sitting on 285,000 km and has been extremely low maintenance. I'm driving about 60 km a day to and from work, with an occasional 2-3 hour drive out of town once every six weeks. I have no family and I'm looking to downsize, but not to a city car. I'm used to the Magna's V6, so I'd still like to drive something with a little bit of grunt, but would like it to be more fuel efficient than the Magna. A used Japanese car would be my preference and my budget would be about $8000-$10,000. A little bit of boot space would also be handy for weekends away and I'm after something reliable that's not going to cost me a lot in maintenance. The Magna actually had ABS brakes, and airbags, so I would not like to downgrade from this in terms of safety. I was leaning towards a Lancer or something similar.

I agree with your view of going Japanese for reliability. The Lancer would be one I would recommend, along with the Mazda3 and the Toyota Corolla. They're comfortable, fuel-efficient, safe, and have decent performance.
