Asked by Malcolm Ward
I have had a few problems with my 2004 Toyota Kluger Grande, the one of most concern concerns the dash screen that controls the GPS, heating/cooling and stereo controls, which has packed it in. When the car is started the Toyota logo comes on, but the screen then reverts to a completely dark state as if the engine was switched off. A replacement from Toyota costs $6500; a wrecker would supply one for $2500. Have you heard of this problem before, and can you suggest some alternative(s) to having to outlay this amount of money, particularly when you can purchase a good portable GPS for around $400?

12 Aug 2010We haven't had any other reports of this sort at Cars Guide, but perhaps readers could tell us about their experience with this model. Before you do anything else have an auto electrician take a look at it to see if it's possible to repair the screen. Depending on the advice of the auto elec you have two options as I see it; replace the screen with one from the wrecker, or simply use a portable GPS. If you decide on the latter and you don't fix the GPS in the car its value will be affected and it will be harder to sell the car later on.
