What's a good small car for $20,000?

Asked by Adele T, Qld.

I'm looking at buying a small car, preferably 2013-15 and priced around $20,000. I drive 50 minutes each way per day, and two thirds of it is highway driving. I also want a car my daughter can do her learner's hours on. So far, I have been looking at Ford Focus Trend, Hyundai i30 Activex, and Holden Cruze SRI. Do you have any recommendations or alternatives on the best one?

Of those you have been looking at I would rule out the Cruze on the basis of its transmission troubles. The Focus and the Hyundai are good cars and would do what you want nicely. Others to consider would be the Mazda3 and the Kia Rio.
