I think my mechanic broke my car

Asked by Vicky

When I took my 2010 Nissan Murano to a local Nissan dealer for a for a regular 80,000 km service I was told that the transfer case was cracked and it would cost $5300 to replace it with a new one, or $2600 with a second hand one. We never had any oil leaks or any other problems with the car until this service, but they are trying to convince us that it has been leaking for a long time.

I suspect it was broken at the service. Is there anything I can do? This is so disappointing.

The crack is immediately next to the drainage fitting. It looks like it has been cracked when tightened up. My car is not driveable any more since the service yesterday as oil is leaking out very quickly.

If the crack happened recently it should look fresh, so inspect it visually in the presence of the dealership people.

It’s hard to prove conclusively that it happened while it was at the dealership, but the fact that it is now leaking profusely suggests that it wasn’t cracked before you took it in, or at least it wasn’t cracked as badly as it is now.

Try and reach an agreement with the dealership.
