Back in September I bought my wife a Ford Focus LX for her birthday. Then one morning in November it gave all of the indications of having a flat battery. After collecting the car the dealer let us know there was a problem with the wiring loom and they would loan us a car while they sorted it out with Ford. When we asked what the problem was we were initially we met with a wall of silence, and they finally came good and asked did we realize the car was built in South Africa? I said yes, and so? We were then informed that the South Africans use three different wiring looms in the Focus. My comment was that should then get one, but we were then informed that Ford Australia only showed two of these looms and the missing one was the one we needed. Late November the dealer rang to sand they needed the loan car back and that Ford had organized a rental car for us. When queried how our Focus was going we were told Ford had tracked down the part and it should be here shortly. Ford had arranged for us to have a rental car - it was a Corolla - until December 1st and that Ford was rushing the part to them. When I checked on the progress on November 30th I was informed that the part still had not arrived, and that I should just keep driving the rental car while ours was being fixed. I checked with the dealer again on December 10th and was again told they did not have an answer for me. I was advised to ring Ford Customer Relations and register my disgust at the time taken. I did but no one could help me as the person dealing with my case was tied up and would ring me back. When they finally did I received a very sympathetic hearing, but no answers. I told them that it was ridiculous that we had bought a new car that was not functional, and added that if they could not get the part; they should raid a Focus in stock for the part to get us back on the road. Their answer that that can't be done because they had ordered the part for our car. I also told them that they should replace the car immediately, but was told that wasn't possible. I finished by saying they should refund us the money as the car was not what we purchased, i.e. it cannot be driven. That too wasn't possible, they said. When I asked when my car would be mobile their answer was basically that they didn't know. I pointed out that I drive a Korean dual-cab, and on the only occasion I have had to replace a part the dealer told me none in Australia, but they ordered it and it arrived in three days. How can a part from South Africa take at this stage at least two weeks and still no one knows when or if it will arrive. While on the surface a rental appears to be a good outcome, the problem is the insurance on it. The basic excess is very high, so we took out an excess reduction at $15.64 per day. Our own cars have an excess of $500. As the car was only going to required for a few days, as we thought, this was acceptable. But it has been over two weeks and there is no end in sight, and this cost is going to become significant. Ford could not care about this at all. I now understand the frustration some of your readers have with Ford. If you have any suggestions or advice I would welcome it.

30 Dec 2010We contacted Ford on your behalf and they have told us they are fast-tracking the part and it will be available within days. We also understand that the dealer will take the part from another car in stock to get yours going in the meantime. As for the insurance on the rental car I would present the dealer/Ford with the bill and ask them to take care of it. There is no reason that should be out of pocket.
