2021 Genesis G70 detailed: Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3 Series rival sticks with old engines but gets new exhaust for facelift

The Genesis G70 gains a “more aggressive” exhaust system for V6-powered variants.

Hyundai’s luxury brand Genesis has revealed its new-look G70 sedan, with the four-door performer set to bring a number of styling and tech enhancements when it hits local showrooms in the first half of 2021.

The refreshed Genesis G70 will stick with its current 2.0- and 3.3-litre engine options, with the latter gaining a sportier variable exhaust and a built-in ‘drift’ mode for its all-wheel-drive system, although Australian examples are likely to remain rear-wheel drive.

This means that local buyers will continue with the choice of either a 185kW/353Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, or a 272kW/510Nm 3.3-litre twin-turbocharged V6.

The new G70 adopts the brand’s latest design language with the signature ‘quad lamp’ head- and tail-light design seen on the G80 sedan and the GV80 SUV.

Also distinguishing the updated model is an aggressive ‘crest’ grille, air extractors by the front wheels, as well as four all-new wheel designs.

On the inside, the updated G70 benefits from a new 10.25-inch touchscreen multimedia system with over-the-air sat-nav updates, voice recognition, smartphone mirroring and a surround-view monitor.

Other interior updates extend to an enlarged instrument cluster for improved readability, a faster wireless smartphone charger, as well as windshield and front door acoustic glass to reduce noise in the cabin.

For improved safety, the new G70 gains an enhanced driver-assistance suite that includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, safe exit warning, among others.

Pricing and exact specifications have yet to be confirmed for the Australian market, however, the current G70 range is available in six variants, priced from $59,300 plus on-road costs in entry-level guise, up to $79,950 for the range-topping 3.3-litre Ultimate Sport.

As CarsGuide has previously reported, the G70 range may soon be expanded with the addition of a Shooting Brake variant.

After images surfaced showing a wagon-bodied prototype in testing, a spokesperson from Genesis said that it would be strongly considered for Australia, assuming it makes it to production.

“Whilst we can confirm that a G70 Shooting Brake concept is being evaluated, no decision has been made yet as to whether it will go into production,” the Genesis spokesperson said.

“Given G70 is already produced in right-hand drive a ‘Shooting Brake’ variant would be a viable and great addition to the G70 range in Australia, if it were to make it into production.”
