BMW Z4 2019 engines confirmed

BMW Group Australia has confirmed a late first quarter 2019 launch date for its new Z4 convertible, which will be offered in three variants, the entry-level sDrive20i, mid-spec sDrive30i and the flagship M40i.

Both the 20i and 30i are motivated by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine in differing states of tune, the former producing 145kW/320Nm and the latter upping the ante to 190kW/400Nm.

This translates to a 6.6-second and 5.4s 0-100km/h acceleration time, respectively.

The Z4 shares its platform with the Toyota Supra coupe, which will go on-sale internationally later in 2019.

Meanwhile, the range-topping M40i is motivated by a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder which delivers 250kW/500Nm, making the same sprint in 4.6s.

The top-spec Z4 also benefits from sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Sport brakes and limited-slip differential and a 50/50 weight distribution.

Fuel economy figures have also been revealed, with the 20i and 30i returning 6.0-6.1-litres per 100km, while the M40i is a bit thirstier at 7.1-7.4L/100km.

BMW is still finalising local specifications, but says it will likely continue its theme of offering a higher level of standard equipment compared to overseas markets.

The German carmaker has no further comments on future additions, however it has confirmed that a full-fat M variant is currently off the cards.

When asked how the Z4 will fare with Toyota's mechanically similar, and likely cheaper sportscar alternative, BMW Group Australia product communications manager Adam Davis said: "They are different cars for different market segments, but we have a lot of respect for the collaboration."

Now larger than before, the new Z4 measures 4324mm long (+85mm), 1865mm wide (+74mm) and 1304mm tall (+13mm).

However, the 2470mm wheelbase is also shorter by 26mm.

The BMW Z4 will make its official debut at the Paris motor show next month.
