Ford Transit 2020 pricing and specs detailed: Massive standard equipment upgrades for VW Crafter nemesis

Ford's new Transit might look the same, but it has significant updates under the skin.

Ford has revealed its updated Transit commercial van for the 2020 model year, with significant upgrades to the large van and cab-chassis  model's standard specification and safety kit.

Standard inclusions on every Transit variant have been increased to include auto emergency braking (AEB – with pedestrian detection), lane keep assist, lane departure warning and traffic sign recognition.

Rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring, a reversing camera, as well as front and rear parking sensors are available on every variant excluding the cab-chassis variants.

Other non-safety spec enhancements include a heated windscreen, auto high-beam lights, auto wipers with heated windscreen, and a 230-volt inverter with 400W household socket.

Every 2020 Ford Transit will also get an 8.0-inch multimedia touchscreen (up from the outgoing Transit’s 6.5-inch screen) with Ford’s Sync3 operating system which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Every Transit gets a bigger screen, but sat nav is a $600 option. Every Transit gets a bigger screen, but sat nav is a $600 option.

The Transit continues to be offered with just one engine – a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel producing 125kW/390Nm, mated to either a six-speed manual sending power to the rear wheels, or with a six-speed automatic sending power to the front wheels.

There is a new dual-cab chassis option added to the range for a total of six Transit variants with a new starting price of $50,490 (see pricing table below for more information).

On the options list is premium paint ($650), custom SVO paint ($1400), extra passenger seat ($150 - the standard front-row seat configuration is two), a high roof for van variants ($1500), sat-nav and voice control ($500) and dual sliding load doors for van variants ($1000).

The Transit requires servicing once a year or every 15,000km and is covered by Ford’s five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty promise (provided the customer meets certain conditions). Standard service prices are capped at $349 for the first four years or 120,000km for private and small fleet buyers.

It will go on to do battle with the Volkswagen Crafter (from $48,890), Fiat Ducato (from $42,990) Peugeot Boxer (from $47,470), and Renault Master (from $43,490 - update due soon).
