Though the Mazda CX-5 is starting to get a bit long in the tooth, especially compared to newer rivals like the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, it is still Mazda’s best-selling model. That means there is interest in the model for families around Australia.

The last 12 months for the automotive industry were fraught with launch delays, stock shortages and lockdowns, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a bumper year for car reviews.
CarsGuide published, on average, more than one review per day in 2021, with a total of nearly 500 despite the constant disruptions throughout the year.
Regardless, there were some surprises in our 10 most-popular reviews list, but let us know which have been your favourites from 2021.
10. Mazda CX-5 2021 review: Akera turbo-petrol AWD long-term
9. Haval H6 2021 review
Arguably no other model saw more of a glow up than the Haval H6 in 2021, which ditched the drab and dreary for fresh and funky. The new-generation H6 is, hopefully, a sign of things to come from the ambitious Chinese brand, who aims to be a top-10 player in the next few years.

8. Kia Stonic 2021 review
Kia’s SUV expansion begun last year with its Seltos and continued in early 2021 with the launch of the Stonic light SUV to take on the likes of the Mazda CX-3, Toyota Yaris Cross and Nissan Juke. The success of its larger SUV models must have a trickle down effect, because interest in the Stonic remained strong throughout the year.

7. Ford Everest 2021 review: Basecamp off-road test
Car brands are always promising off-road ability in their large SUVs, but we actually put the claims to the test in the Ford Everest Basecamp. Fitted with a number of bush-bash-ready accessories from the factory, is the Everest Basecamp a good option for those that don’t want to build a rugged SUV themselves?

6. Toyota HiLux 2021 review: SR5 Double Cab cab chassis GVM test
Utes are designed for working, despite who might buy them, so what better way to test Australia’s most-popular workhorse than with a thorough workout? Toyota expanded the fresh-faced HiLux range with the introduction of a high-spec double-cab cab chassis model, and we put it through tis paces.

5. Isuzu D-Max 2021 review: X-Terrain long-term
These days, it seems like the dual-cab ute is equal in popularity to SUVs for family transportation. After all, they offer space inside for five passengers, room in the back for tools/toys and off-road ability to get you nearly anywhere. But what’s one like to actually live with? We find out in this long-term review of the Isuzu D-Max X-Terrain.

4. GWM Ute 2021 review
Shedding its cheap and cheerful image, the Great Wall Steed was reborn as the GWM Ute in 2021, bringing in much higher levels of safety, sophistication and style. But is now good enough to challenge the segment-leading Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux?

3. Toyota Kluger 2021 review: Grande hybrid
A seven-seat Toyota SUV? Yep, this is going to be a popular review. Taking the wheel of the new-generation Kluger, we find out what it’s like to live with for a week with the family. Oh did we mention this new Kluger also has a so-hot-right-now hybrid powertrain?

2. Ford Ranger 2021 review: Wildtrak X off-road test
Ford’s most important model promises to be a lot of things to a lot of people. It’s a workhorse for the tradies that can pull double duty as a family hauler, but it also has to be a capable and comfortable off-road for the weekend warrior. We test its credentials in the latter category in this Adventure review.

1. 300 Series Land Cruiser review: How different is it to the legendary 200 Series?
It’s a rare opportunity when a car brand lets us drive their new car back-to-back with the old one, but this was exactly what happened with the Toyota LandCruiser. Though the newer 300 Series model was a pre-production prototype, there was still lots to learn by jumping between past and present LandCruiser models.
