    The $192,000 A8 50 TDI represents the entry-point to the new fourth-generation A8 line-up. The diesel 50 TDI sits $3000 beneath the petrol 55 TFSI variant, and a full $15,000 under the long-wheelbase A8 L. 

    Like most models at this end of the price scale, it’s easier to describe the features this car doesn't have rather than those it does, and like all Audis, there are a bunch of options available. 

    Aside from a handful of wheel options, Alcantara headlining is available for $3600, all-wheel steering adds $4500, night vision will cost you $5200, an upgraded 23-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system will set you back $12,100, and laser headlights are available for an extra $13,200.

    Five option packs start at $6690  for the 'Entertainment package' which brings multimedia to the rear seats, full leather can be had for $9950, as can the 'Sport styling package', a bunch of other niceties are added with the $11,000 'Premium plus package'.

    And if you’ve already selected the rear seat entertainment system, you can also choose the $18,500 'Executive package' which brings individual reclining back seats, folding tables, rear passenger-side footrest and foot massage function among a few other treats. 

    The 50 TDI comes with a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 which produces 210kW/600Nm, and sends power to all four wheels with Audi’s Quattro system via an eight-speed (torque converter) auto. The official combined fuel consumption figure is an impressive 5.9L/100km.
