Nikki Cousins and Peter Anderson road test and review the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Akera, with specs, fuel consumption and verdict.
We’re looking for answers. Specifically, what makes this car so popular? The CX-5 has taken the Australian SUV market by the scruff of its neck and consigned perennial favourite, Toyota’s RAV4, into second place and by quite some margin.
The medium SUV segment is absolutely jam-packed with choice - Japan, Korea, Germany, the US, and France are all in on the act. What’s more, a number of those other cars are significantly newer than Mazda’s soon-to-be-renewed sales juggernaut. Others have more space, others have better tech and a couple have a seven-seat option.
The CX-5 Akera diesel is the absolute top of the Mazda CX-5 range, with a long standard feature list, a six-speed auto and all-wheel drive.
Peter and Nikki each spent a week with it to see just why it has ruled the roost for nearly four years.
Plus: Tim Robson takes a look at the next generation CX-5 at the LA motor show.
