What is a good second hand family car?

Answered by CarsGuide 2 Jun 2017

I would rule out the Cruze straight away, they have too many issues with reliability with them to be considered. The Elantra and the Camry are both good cars. Your budget should allow you to buy a 2014 Elantra, but probably won’t stretch to a Camry. You might have to go for a 2012-2013 Camry.

Toyota Camry: What is the lifespan of the hybrid batteries?

Answered by CarsGuide 19 Oct 2015

Toyota spokesman Mike Breen says: "Our inspection of Mr Katahiotis's Camry hybrid taxi revealed the hybrid battery failed due to overheating which was caused by the cooling fan being blocked by lint and fluff accumulation. Toyota recommends hybrid vehicles used as taxis are fitted with an additional filter due to the high incidence of entry and exit from the passenger-side rear door, which was not fitted in this case. All Toyota dealers and outside service agents have been advised of this requirement by service bulletin as well as major taxi fleet operators. In this case, despite the considerable distance travelled, Toyota has agreed to contribute 25 per cent as a gesture of goodwill and, in addition, a filter was installed and the owner advised of the regular maintenance requirement".

It could be a mismatched gear set in the oil pump in the transmission, or a mismatch in the planetary gear set.

Toyota Camry 2013: Gearbox whine

Answered by CarsGuide 18 Oct 2013

Final drive gear whine is something many owners complain about in Toyotas. It's usually a result of the gear cutting process and there is not much you can do about it, except replace the gears. You could try different gear oil, which might make it a little quieter.
