Audi Cityhopper is codename for another SUV

Audi is reportedly developing a new small SUV to sit between existing Q2 and Q3 SUVs that will be based on the next-generation A3 small hatchback.

According to a report from AutoExpress, Audi is looking to broaden its range of compact models to help with falling sales of the Q3, and give Q2 buyers a slight step up in size.

The project is codenamed Cityhopper internally, and will see Audi apply the Allroad treatment to the A3 that is also used on the A4 and A6 Allroad - raised ride height, plastic bumpers and fender arches, and special badging will feature.

However, Audi reportedly won’t use the Allroad name because the Cityhopper is expected to only be offered in front-wheel drive form. Instead of a heavy duty off-roader, it will be more of a cosmetic upgrade like the Ford Focus Active.

The Cityhopper will reportedly only be offered in front-wheel drive.

Measuring around 4300mm in length, the Cityhopper will be 200mm shorter than a Q3, but crucially 110mm longer than a Q2.

Under the body the Cityhopper will be the same as the new A3 and will be one of the first models to utilise the VW Group’s new MQB Evo platform, which is an upgraded version of the platform that sits underneath a plethora of cars, including the Volkswagen Golf, Skoda Octavia and Audi TT.

Engine choices in the Cityhopper will include a range of turbocharged petrol and diesel powerplants ranging from around 90kW to 165kW. Audi’s 48-volt mild-hybrid tech is likely to be made standard across the range to help further reduce fuel consumption.
