The BMW 118d has the only diesel engine in the 1 Series hatchback range and its also one of the most affordable cars in the line-up with its list price $44,990.
The 118d isn’t the cheapest in the range, though – that award goes to the 118i, which is $5000 and has a petrol engine. Both cars, however, share the same standard features, which include a 6.5-inch display, with sat nav, reversing camera, six-speaker stereo, a digital radio and air-conditioning.
The 118d comes standard with the 'Sport Line' package, too, which adds 16-inch light alloy wheels and LED headlights, while in the cabin it adds cloth upholstery sports seats and a leather sports steering wheel, high gloss black trim and BMW scuff plates.
A 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel moves the 118d and makes 110kW of power and heaps of torque at 320Nm.
According to BMW, this frugal engine uses just 4.2L/100km over a combination of urban and open roads. The transmission is a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic.
The 118i has the maximum five-star ANCAP rating awarded in 2011. Coming standard is AEB (city) with pedestrian detection and lane departure warning.
