    Sitting at the peak of the (non-performance) Golf hatch pyramid, the Highline hatch is priced at $35,990 drive-away (MSRP $34,490) for the petrol-powered 110TSI version, and $38,490 drive-away (MSRP $36,990) for the 110TDI diesel, which also locates it firmly on the top shelf of the of the volume-selling small-hatch market.

    Standard feature highlights include cruise control, seven airbags, driver-fatigue detection, a new 8.0-inch multimedia screen, AEB, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual zone climate control air, 'leather appointed' trim, a leather-trimmed steering wheel, LED headlights and daytime running lights, a rear-view camera, rain-sensing wipers, auto headlights, parking sensors, electric driver's seat with memory function, keyless entry and start, interior ambient lighting, and a panoramic electric glass sunroof.

    The 1.4-litre turbo-petrol version produces 110kW from 5000-6000rpm, and 250Nm across a broad range from just 1500-3500rpm, while the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel delivers 110kW at 3500-4000rpm, with torque stepping up to 340Nm from 1750-3000rpm. A standard seven-speed 'DSG' dual-clutch auto transmission drives the front wheels only.
