Best first car options?

Answered by CarsGuide 11 Nov 2016

Do not buy a Cruze, or buy a European brand. They will prove costly. It's best to go for the cars that are well proven over many years. The Lancer is a good one, but so too is the Toyota Yaris or Corolla, Suzuki Swift, Mazda2 or 3, or Mitsubishi Colt.

I wouldn’t recommend the Focus or the Golf, European is not the way to go. The best choices are the Mazda3, Mitsubishi Lancer and the Hyundai i30.

Best small hatch for $12k

Typically you're looking at a car around 2010 vintage for that money, so it's got a few years on it and will have done a few kays. With that in mind it's best to go for a car that's going to give you a good run for your money over a few years. Steer clear of European brands, that includes Ford as its small cars come out of Europe, and go for a solid brand with a good reputation for reliability. In my view that means a Toyota Corolla, Mazda 3, Mitsubishi Lancer, Kia Rio, Hyundai i30.

Honda Civic vs Mazda 3

Answered by CarsGuide 31 Jul 2015

Both cars are good ones, and I’m sure you would be happy with either of them. If I had to choose I would probably go for the Mazda, for its economy and servicing costs, and I believe it would be a little more comfortable. The Civic is a very good car, though; it’s well built and a delight to drive.
